It has taken three decades of research and development to create this encyclopedia, with the hope for International Scientific Awareness, Inter-Faith Understanding, Sustainable Technological Innovation and a much desired World Peace. A Research into Scientific Experimentation / Empiricism (Ulum al ’itibar) and Origins, Attitudes, Values and Rejuvenation of Islamic Science along with its implications on Sustainable Development and new energy technologies. Award-winning sustainability training specialist and internationally acclaimed Biologist, Poet and Humanitarian, Gabriel Iqbal, translates his visions into pragmatic disciplines by reviewing the entire history of Experimental Science and links with scientific pragmatism and coexistence. The origins and sustainable ethical applications of practical empirical scientific method are rooted in the Golden Age of Islam. A thousand years of Science, Technology and Civilization in Islam (800 - 1800) and its implication for Sustainable Development in a modern context is elaborated. This illustrated encyclopedia is also available as an option with large poster prints of the illustrations in this encyclopedia for usage as a supplement to the Educational Science Curriculum and Science Museum Exhibitions. Optionally 60+ Colour Coded Posters are available with this research for use in Schools, Universities and Museums. The posters can be displayed permanently on the hallways, classrooms, libraries and laboratories and will highly improve the student's visual appeal, learning ability and knowledge of Science and Civilization in Islam along with Proactive Solution Oriented Research and Innovation Capability for Ethical Scientific Thinking, Global Leadership, Sustainability and above all a Responsible and Sincere attitude towards World Peace. Science curriculum based projects are also included. An extended bibliography is available to supplement this research. The research in this encyclopedia is a form of “Civilized Science” that can perhaps save us from our current challenge of evolving from a gregarious species to a coexisting one. The goal is to work collectively as part of a world community and re-engineer Scientific Ethics and Principles for the betterment of the Global Human Condition and a Sustainable Future that works in harmony with the Balanced Phenomena of Natural Law. |
A note on peer reviewed research

Science and Islam
Professor Jim Al-Khalili BBC Documentary Science and Islam is a three-part BBC documentary about the history of science in medieval Islamic civilization presented by Jim Al-Khalili. Jim Al-Khalili is a famous British physicist and author. A professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Surrey, Al-Khalili gained fame for writing a popular science book named “Blackholes, Wormholes and Time Machines”. He often appears on several television shows to explain scientific ideas. Jim Al-Khalili became an expert and notable author on mathematical models of exotic atomic nuclei. As a prominent broadcaster, he frequently appears on television and radio. He has written countless articles for the British press. Al-Khalili was honored with the Royal Society Michael Faraday Prize for science communication in 2007. He is also a member of the British Council Science and Engineering Advisory Group as well as the Royal Society Equality and Diversity Panel. He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2008. Episodes: Part 1: The Language of Science Part 2: The Empire of Reason Part 3: The Power of Doubt Part 1: The Language of Science: Physicist Jim Al-Khalili travels through Syria, Iran, Tunisia and Spain to tell the story of the great leap in scientific knowledge that took place in the Islamic world between the 8th and 14th centuries. Its legacy is tangible, with terms like algebra, algorithm and alkali all being Arabic in origin and at the very heart of modern science - there would be no modern mathematics or physics without algebra, no computers without algorithms and no chemistry without alkalis. For Baghdad-born Al-Khalili this is also a personal journey and on his travels he uncovers a diverse and outward-looking culture, fascinated by learning and obsessed with science. From the great mathematician Al-Khwarizmi, who did much to establish the mathematical tradition we now know as algebra, to Ibn Sina, a pioneer of early medicine whose Canon of Medicine was still in use as recently as the 19th century, he pieces together a remarkable story of the often-overlooked achievements of the early medieval Islamic scientists. Part 2: The Empire of Reason: Physicist Jim Al-Khalili travels through Syria, Iran, Tunisia and Spain to tell the story of the great leap in scientific knowledge that took place in the Islamic world between the 8th and 14th centuries. Al-Khalili travels to northern Syria to discover how, a thousand years ago, the great astronomer and mathematician Al-Biruni estimated the size of the earth to within a few hundred miles of the correct figure. He discovers how medieval Islamic scholars helped turn the magical and occult practice of alchemy into modern chemistry. In Cairo, he tells the story of the extraordinary physicist Ibn al-Haytham, who helped establish the modern science of optics and proved one of the most fundamental principles in physics - that light travels in straight lines. Prof Al-Khalili argues that these scholars are among the first people to insist that all scientific theories are backed up by careful experimental observation, bringing a rigour to science that didn't really exist before. Part 3: The Power of Doubt: Physicist Jim Al-Khalili tells the story of the great leap in scientific knowledge that took place in the Islamic world between the 8th and 14th centuries. Al-Khalili turns detective, hunting for clues that show how the scientific revolution that took place in the 16th and 17th centuries in Europe had its roots in the earlier world of medieval Islam. He travels across Iran, Syria and Egypt to discover the huge astronomical advances made by Islamic scholars through their obsession with accurate measurement and coherent and rigorous mathematics. He then visits Italy to see how those Islamic ideas permeated into the West and ultimately helped shape the works of the great European astronomer Copernicus, and investigates why science in the Islamic world appeared to go into decline after the 16th and 17th centuries, only for it to re-emerge in the present day. ![]() Clare Forestier is a professionally qualified and highly experienced broadcast journalist.
